8a Companies
Section 8(a) of the Small Business Act of 1998 authorized the creation of a Small Business and Capital Ownership Development program within the Small Business Administration (SBA).
The purpose of the 8(a) program is to help eligible small businesses compete in the American economy through business development. That development is channeled through Federal regulations which allow the eligible small businesses to contract directly with the federal government, or to subcontract with larger business entities which have Federal Government contracts. In order to encourage its many agencies to utilize small businesses, the government has established goals for the percent of agency budgets that must be expended through small businesses, and periodically provides incentives, including monetary incentives. Eligible businesses include Alaska Native Corporations and companies which are majority owned by Alaska Native Corporations.
In an effort to capitalize on the 8(a) program, Goldbelt formed an 8(a) Company in 2000, and four more in 2002 and 2003. In each case, while retaining majority ownership, Goldbelt has offered minority ownership to other companies or individuals with expertise in the area of business that each Company is devoted to. A brief description of each 8(a) Company may be found under this link.
